Learn to code at St Cuthbert’s College in 2026

Welcome to Code Champions and thank you for your interest in our coding classes for Junior School students at St Cuthbert’s College.

In 2026, we’ll be running classes on Tuesday. There are places available in Terms 1 and 2, and we invite your daughter to join us.

No coding experience is necessary

Students may have done some computer programming in school class but there are no specific requirements to join our groups. The girls will learn all they need to know during our sessions to successfully complete the activities. (As our young coders progress, hopefully they will stay with us, building on these skills and moving on to more advanced activities.)

Ages, times and dates

Classes are for students in Years 4-6 from St Cuthbert’s College. Currently these are on Tuesday and take place in the Junior School.

Classes are grouped by age and will run depending on demand. For Terms 1 and 2, we are planning:

  • 1-1.35pm – Year 4
  • 3.15-4.10pm – Year 5
  • 4.15-5.10pm – Year 6

Lesson content

Code Champions offers a range of activities for learning computer programming. Each term students will explore a new challenge. Our lessons are designed to be engaging and fun, build knowledge, develop computational thinking, and help students take their skills to the next level. They’ll learn about basic coding principles – like variables, conditions, loops, and functions – the importance of syntax (programming rules, accuracy and structure), and how to debug code (find and fix errors).

For Terms 1 and 2, content will be:

Year 4: This will be an introduction to some of the basic principles of coding and computational thinking, mostly using block-style coding.

Years 5 and 6: The course will be primarily text coding with Python. This is a popular and versatile programming language that will allow the class to learn and practise a range of coding principles.

Kids of all ages can code but we have limited time and resources and, unfortunately, can’t accommodate everyone. If your child doesn’t currently fall into these age groups or timings/dates, please feel free to register below and we’ll keep you updated on future courses. (We are discussing with the College options for adding Years 7 and 8, for example, so hopefully these will be possible soon.)

Cost

The course will run for a total of 18 weeks across Terms 1 and 2. The cost is:

  • Year 4 @ $425 per student (as the class runs at lunchtime, it is shorter than the after-school class)
  • Years 5 and 6 @ $675 per student

A computer, software and learning materials (as needed) are provided for use during the classes. We suggest students have a pad and pen for notes. All devices have touchscreens but they may also prefer to bring their own mouse (rather than use ours or the trackpad). Other than that, all we need them to bring is an enthusiasm for coding!

Hopefully, this covers most things. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Greg Adams at info@codechampions.nz. Otherwise, we can’t wait to get going again and are looking forward to seeing everyone next term!
