Welcome to Code Champions and thank you for your interest in our coding classes at St Cuthbert’s College. There are places available in Terms 3 and 4, and we invite your daughter to join us.
After successfully launching in Term 3 in 2023, we’re delighted to have finished Terms 1 and 2, to complete a year at the College.
Next term, we’ll continue our coding journey, introducing students to some of the basic elements of computer coding and computational thinking.
No coding experience is necessary
Students may have done some programming in school class but there are no specific requirements to join our groups. The girls will learn all they need to know during our sessions to successfully complete the activities. (As our young coders progress, hopefully they will stay with us, building on these skills and moving on to more advanced activities.)
Ages, times and dates
Classes are for students in Years 4-6 from St Cuthbert’s College. Currently these are on Tuesday and take place in the Junior School.
Classes are grouped by age, although we may offer to move students if we feel a different group is more appropriate to their skills. The number of classes we run will depend on demand (so we may end up combining the afternoon classes into one). Provisionally, for Terms 3 and 4, we are planning:
- 1-1.35pm – Year 4
- 3.15-4.10pm – Year 5
- 4.15-5.10pm – Year 6
The courses will run for a total of 16 weeks (across Terms 3 and 4), as follows:
- Term 3: 30 July; 6, 13, 20 and 27 August; 3, 10 and 17 September.
- Term 4: 15, 22 and 29 October; 5, 12, 19 and 26 November; 3 December.
Lesson content
Year 4: This will be an introduction to some of the basic principles of coding and computational thinking, mostly using block-style coding.
Years 5 and 6: The course will be a mix of block and text coding, with Python as the primary underlying programming language.
Kids of all ages can code but we have limited time and resources and, unfortunately, can’t accommodate everyone. If your child doesn’t currently fall into these age groups or timings/dates, please feel free to register below and we’ll keep you updated on future courses. (We are discussing with the College options for adding Years 7 and 8, for example, so hopefully these will be possible soon.)
About Code Champions
If you’d like to know more about us, our background and our approach to teaching computer programming go to codechampions.nz/about/
Cost
The cost for the full 16-week course across Terms 3 and 4 is:
- Year 4 @ $395 per student (as the class runs at lunchtime, it is slightly shorter than the after-school class)
- Years 5 and 6 @ $585 per student
A computer, software and learning materials (as needed) are provided for use during the classes. We suggest students have a pad and pen for notes. All devices have touchscreens but they may also prefer to bring their own mouse (rather than use ours or the trackpad). Other than that, all we need them to bring is an enthusiasm for coding!
Hopefully, this covers most things. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Greg Adams at info@codechampions.nz. Otherwise, we can’t wait to get going again and are looking forward to seeing everyone next term!
