We’ve had a great response for our coding classes next year and have temporarily closed registrations while we process applications.
If you’re interested in joining us, please still get in touch at admin@codechampions.nz and we’ll add you to a waiting list. It doesn’t mean all spots for Terms 1 and 2 have been taken but we just need to go through everything before accepting anyone else.

Welcome to Code Champions and thank you for your interest in our coding classes at Saint Kentigern Boys’ and Girls’ Schools.
In 2024, we’ll be running classes on Wednesday and Thursday, and places are available on either day for our new course in Terms 1 and 2.
No coding experience is necessary
Students may have done some computer coding in school class but there are no specific requirements to join our groups. They will learn all they need to know during our sessions to successfully complete the activities. (As our young coders progress, hopefully they will stay with us, building on these skills and moving on to more advanced activities.)
Ages, times and dates
Classes are for students in Years 4-8 from Saint Kentigern Boys’ and Girls’ Schools. Currently these are on Wednesday or Thursday, and take place in the DVC Room (Science Block).
Classes are grouped by age, although we may offer to move students if we feel a different group is more appropriate to their skills. The number of classes we run will depend on demand. Provisionally, for Terms 1 and 2, we are planning:
- 3.15-4.10pm – Year 4, 5 and 6
- 4.15-5.10pm – Year 6, 7 and 8
The courses will run for a total of 14 weeks (across Terms 1 and 2). Students attend either Wednesday or Thursday, as follows:
Wednesdays:
- Term 1 (7 weeks): 14, 21 and 28 February; 6, 13, 20 and 27 March
- Term 2 (7 weeks): 1, 8 and 15 May; 5, 12, 19 and 26 June.
Thursdays:
- Term 1 (7 weeks): 15, 22 and 29 February; 7, 14, 21 and 28 March
- Term 2 (7 weeks): 2, 9 and 16 May; 6, 13, 20 and 27 June.
Please note: Generally, we don’t schedule a class in the last week of term, as this gives us the opportunity to run an extra class should there be any cancellations or problems during the term. Also, there is a gap of two weeks in May (22/23 and 29/30), as the tutor is unavailable through an unavoidable work commitment.
Lesson content
For Terms 1 and 2, classes will be learning:
Almost all the coding students will be doing is text based, in other words writing the code in letters and symbols, as opposed to using pre-coded blocks. We’ll be exploring JavaScript and HTML, which will allow us to create simple programs and games, as well as websites and, as we progress, more complex code, like chatbots.
Kids of all ages can code but we have limited time and resources and, unfortunately, can’t accommodate everyone. If your child doesn’t currently fall into these age groups or timings/dates, please feel free to register below and we’ll keep you updated on future courses.
About Code Champions
If you’d like to know more about us, our background and our approach to teaching computer programming go to codechampions.nz/about/
Cost
The cost for the full 14-week course is $515 per student.
A computer, software and learning materials (as needed) are provided for use during the classes. We suggest students have a pad and pen for notes. All devices have touchscreens but they may also prefer to bring their own mouse (rather than use ours or the trackpad). Other than that, all we need them to bring is an enthusiasm for coding!
Hopefully, this covers most things. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Greg Adams at info@codechampions.nz. Otherwise, we can’t wait to get going again and are looking forward to seeing everyone next term!
