Learn robotics and visit Google

During the upcoming school holidays, Code Champions is offering a coding course with a difference for Saint Kentigern Boys’ and Girls’ School students (Years 4-7). As well as a day’s coding activities, we’ve teamed up with Google to visit the company’s Auckland HQ.

This is a unique opportunity to not only enjoy learning about robotics but also combine this with a look inside one of the world’s leading tech companies and hear from Google engineers about its latest innovations.

Coding and robotics course: Tuesday 1 October

Join us for a day of coding activities based on the Maqueen Robot and Mind+ block coding language.

Maqueen is a programmable robot, designed to help students learn to code in an engaging and constructive way. It has many exciting features including movement and LED display, as well as lights, sounds and sensors.

  • Date: Tuesday 1 October
  • Time: 9.25am sign-in for 9.30am start. Pick up at 3pm.
  • Location: DVC Room, Science Block
  • Tutor: Greg Adams
  • Content: The day will start by covering the basic controls of the robots. This will be followed by a number of activities and challenges, including a speed test and obstacle course. In the afternoon, the students will write a code to control the robot remotely, then finish with a race and a battlebots competition (including designing and creating an armour shell for the robot).
  • Age: This course is for students in Years 4-7 at Saint Kentigern Boys’ and Girls’ Schools.
  • Coding experience: None required. Students will learn all the coding skills they need to complete the activities.

Visit to Google’s Auckland HQ: Friday 4 October

The second part of the holiday activity is a trip to Google’s office in Auckland.

Our good friends at Google are kindly allowing us to have a look around and meet staff. The half-day visit will be full on and give students a brief glimpse into what goes on in a global tech company (and eat our packed lunches in the boardroom!).

  • Date: Friday 4 October
  • Time: 9.45am to 1.15pm
  • Location: Google, 10 Madden Street, Wynyard Central, Auckland
  • Content: Tour the Google office, learn about the company and the development of its search technology, and hear from Google engineers about the latest products, including AI-powered Gemini (ai.google/gemini-ecosystem/).
  • Age: Years 4-7 (Please note, the group visiting Google will include a few students from St Cuthbert’s College, who are on a separate holiday course with us.)
  • Drop-off and pick-up: Students will need to be dropped off and picked up at the Google office in central Auckland.
  • Safety, supervision and other information: As this activity takes place away from our normal venue at the school, we will be putting in place procedures to look after your child, including having additional staff and a strict sign-in/sign-out process. We will provide a more detailed overview of our plans to those confirmed on the visit.

Cost and booking

The cost for the full holiday course is $295 (this includes the use of a laptop, micro:bit computer and Maqueen robot, software and other materials during the robotics course, and resources and materials used during the Google visit).

If you’re interested and would like to book a spot, please complete the form below.
